How to convert Query Studio reports to Cognos Workspace Advanced reports

In this article, you will learn how to manually convert Query Studio reports to reports that can be opened in either Cognos Workspace Advanced, Report Studio, or, if you are using Cognos Analytics 11, the Authoring perspective. Although IBM recommends users to wait for a future release of Cognos Analytics 11 that can open Query Studio reports in its new editor, many users feel that they need to convert their existing Query Studio reports now so that they are not continuing to develop in a legacy editor. Because of this, this article will also outline some risks involved with not waiting for the aforementioned future release.

Before outlining the steps for manual conversion, let’s review why Query Studio is being deprecated and its current state.

IBM announced in October 2014 that IBM Cognos Business Intelligence 10.2.2 would be the last version to include Query Studio and Analysis Studio. IBM’s reasoning is roughly that the differences among the many studios in Cognos were enough to cause significant cost in terms of training users on how and when to use the appropriate editor. The hope was that, by deprecating Query Studio and Analysis Studio and then also developing Cognos Workspace Advanced to provide all the functionality of the deprecated studios, users would have a more consistent and centralized editing experience. A little over a year after this announcement, IBM Cognos Analytics 11 was released, and with it came a new report-editing experience called Authoring. However, because IBM was unable to “completely fill the capability gaps” for the initial release, Query Studio and Analysis Studio are currently still available in Cognos Analytics 11 for use, provided that the legacy switch was enabled during installation. IBM has stated that a future release of Cognos Analytics 11 will bring the capabilities of Query Studio and Analysis Studio to the Authoring perspective, though there has been no mention on a timeline for this release.

Now, here are the steps for converting Query Studio reports.

Option 1 (for Cognos BI 10.2.x):

These steps will convert a Query Studio report to a report that can be opened and edited in Cognos Workspace Advanced:

  1. Launch Cognos Workspace Advanced.

  2. Open the Query Studio report.

  3. Navigate to the menu option File > Save As… and save the new report to your desired location.

Option 2 (for versions before Cognos BI 10.2.x):

Alternatively, you can open the Query Studio report in Report Studio and save it as a new report to get the same results as Option 1. The steps are:

  1. Locate the Query Studio report in Cognos Connection.

  2. In the Actions column, click on “More…”

  3. From the available actions, click on “Open with Report Studio”.

  4. Navigate to the menu option File > Save As… and save the new report to your desired location.

Option 3 (for Cognos Analytics 11):

If you have already migrated to Cognos Analytics 11 but still have Query Studio reports in your Content Store and wish to convert them, there is a similar procedure, albeit with a slightly different user interface:

  1. Locate the Query Studio report using the IBM Cognos Analytics portal.

  2. Right-click on the Query Studio report and click on “Convert to report”.

  3. The report will open in the Authoring perspective. Click on the save icon to save the new report to your desired location.

As for the risks involved with not waiting for the future release of Cognos Analytics 11, there are a few known gaps between Query Studio and Cognos Workspace Advanced mostly related to some filtering, layout, and aggregation options. A more specific list can be found on this IBM page. If these issues do not apply to your Query Studio reports, it would certainly be beneficial to convert your reports so as to not continue development in a soon-to-be-deprecated editor.
